By breaking down once monolithic applications into their various service-oriented components, they become easier to not only develop but also test, a win-win in today’s competitive trade landscape.

    “Microservices increase team empowerment and reduce coupling, allowing individual teams to innovate faster, reduce cross-team communication, and feel empowered to Make their own decisions regarding architecture, language, and frameworks,” says EJ Campbell, vice president of engineering, sports, and media production engineering at Verizon Media Group.

    But making the switch to a microservices framework also comes with its unique challenges, as explained in a recent article from CIO. While this atomize down of applications increases team autonomy, it also creates a lot more touching pieces, says Jay Bercher, deputy program manager at Solutions By Design II. “Each touching piece requires its own even of maintenance, and the uphold and supervision of so many elements not only makes the solution more complex, but also increases associated costs.”

    Employ Domain-Driven Design

    “While there are various methods and methodologies for development, domain-driven design and microservices appear to breathe a impeccable match,” says Bercher. “In their work…each development team is answerable for a domain and also answerable for developing the corresponding microservice. This creates a limpid delineation of responsibilities, which in revolve limits redundancies that can occur in parallel development efforts.”

    Don’t share Databases Between Microservices

    Focus on Change Management

    “A faster development process is great, but don’t lose the benefits of microservices by leaving out change control and other valuable governance processes,” says Ron Hayman, chief cloud officer at Avant Communications. “Ensure that you align change control and the approval process to match your agile development lifecycle.”
